When you own a horse, you will want to give him treats occasionally. They are valuable in training and sometimes you just want to give him a treat for being such a great friend.
You can purchase commercial horse treats but they are usually expensive and not as nutritionally sound as plain and simple fruits and vegetables that your horse will love.
Here are some easy to prepare treats your horse will love:
Apples - cut in thin slices make a wonderful treat. Limit apples to no more than two per day as they can cause digestive upsets in some horses.
Sugar cubes - in moderation
Carrots - cut them lengthwise and never give them to your horse slicked in circles as they can lodge in your horse's throat and choke him.
Corn on the cob - this is a treat that many horses enjoy. It should only be given in moderation but then again - all treats should be given in moderation.
Bread- a slice of crusty, stale bread is a treat that many horses find delightful.
Root veggies - most horses enjoy munching root vegetables, slices into strips.
Some foods you should never give your horse include avocados as they are poisonous to a horse's system, most nuts are not tolerated by horses, grass clippings from your lawn can cause your horse a case of life threatening colic.
Now that you know some of the foods that your horse will adore, treat him to some special treats!
